Close Reading: Kon Punye

In today’s post, I invite you to a close reading of the Narsinh Mehta poem that I’ve posted earlier. Using Kon Punye, (Gujarati: કોણ પુન્યે), the poem’s first two words, as its title, the literal translation is “what good karma.” I’ve chosen the title “Good Karma to be born a Woman,” or “Good Karma” for short. In my attached discussion (click on the link KonPunyeArticle1)
I think I have barely begun to unpack the meanings and effects of this lovely song. I believe that to grasp the full power of it, we will want to analyze the Gujarati text in a future, second Close Reading entry.
